An Interactive Meditation on Light’s Duration

LOST LIGHT is a sculptural reflection on the life-span of light — its duration, its disappearance, and our shifting relationship to its presence. In an age of heightened awareness around energy consumption, we rarely perceive the consumption of light itself. Historically, this process was tangible: a candle visibly diminished as it burned, its fading glow marking the passage of time. Light had a body, a limit, a visible end. Lost Light revives this sensorial awareness. It is both a metaphorical trial and a physical object — a luminous device that invites tactile interaction and temporal reflection. To sustain its glow, the viewer must invert the acrylic cylinder, allowing the sand to return to its initial position and gradually reveal the lighting surface. This gesture must be repeated to keep the light alive. In this way, Lost Light transforms the disappearance of light into a physical act — a ritual of renewal. The work reclaims the sensitive, embodied experience of illumination that contemporary technology often erases. It reminds us that light is not merely a utility, but a presence with its own rhythm, fragility, and form of existence.

LOST LIGHT was developed for Lightouch Design Exhibition in Singapore, 2007.
