Virtual installation on smart device support
2012—2015
PERCEPTUAL INSCAPE is a real-time spatial experience that engages with phenomenological theories of perception, particularly the embodied and situated nature of how we encounter space. Utilizing smart device technology, the installation incorporates fictional elements, such as traces of bodily movement that are invisible yet perceptible within the physical world. These digital overlays do not simply add to the visual field; they transform the viewer’s lived experience of space by activating its latent dimensions.
In dialogue with Merleau-Ponty's notion of the body as the primary site of knowing the world, Perceptual Inscape invites participants to inhabit a hybrid perceptual field where the boundaries between the visible and the invisible, the real and the imagined, are continuously negotiated. The installation foregrounds the idea that space is not a neutral container, but a dynamic field shaped by movement, memory, and attention.
By augmenting everyday environments with ephemeral gestures and speculative traces, the work proposes a poetic reconfiguration of presence. It shifts perception from passive observation to active engagement, encouraging viewers to become attuned to the subtle interplay between digital interventions and the physical world. These gestures, though digitally generated, resonate with the embodied experience of space and invite a heightened awareness of its invisible layers. Rather than imposing meaning, the installation opens a contemplative field where the ordinary becomes charged with potential. Viewers are invited to explore perception as a generative act, capable of revealing the richness embedded in daily life and uncovering what often remains unseen. Through this expanded sensory engagement, the work suggests that memory, imagination, and presence are not fixed entities, but fluid processes shaped by attention and interaction. In this way, the installation transforms familiar spaces into poetic landscapes where new forms of meaning and memory can emerge.
Initially conceived for the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Perceptual Inscape explores how digital mediation can activate phenomenological space, transforming it by using mixed reality into a new site of imaginative and contemplative engagement.
